Welcome to Year 6!
Year 6 at St. Dominic is a vibrant and challenging year, packed with both hard work and enjoyment. Alongside preparing for their SATs in May, pupils take on a range of responsibilities, such as becoming sports ambassadors, house captains, and head boy or head girl. As the oldest students in the school, they embrace the opportunity to be role models for the entire school community. One of the most cherished aspects of Year 6 is the buddy system with Nursery and Reception children which fosters responsibility and empathy in the older children while providing the younger children with a supportive connection. Another standout feature of Year 6 is the residential trip, often a highlight of their time at St. Dominic, along with the wide variety of enrichment activities they get to experience.

The Year Six Curriculum
Our units of work are coherently designed and sequenced to ensure broad and balanced coverage of the National Curriculum. This approach provides pupils with increasing opportunities to explore a wide range of topics, enabling them to delve deeper into each subject area, make meaningful connections across domains, and build upon their prior knowledge and skills.
In English, we use high-quality texts to inspire creativity and help children develop as confident and skilled writers. These texts encourage pupils to use a variety of techniques to engage the reader and convey their ideas effectively. A strong emphasis is placed on proofreading and editing, teaching pupils the importance of refining their work to ensure accuracy and clarity. Independence is fostered throughout the writing process, with children taking ownership of their learning and creating a portfolio to showcase their polished final pieces. This portfolio reflects their growth as writers and serves as a celebration of their achievements.
In mathematics, fluency is a key focus, ensuring pupils have a solid grasp of fundamental concepts and the ability to apply them quickly and accurately. Alongside fluency, reasoning and problem-solving are central to our approach, helping children develop their analytical thinking and the ability to tackle complex challenges. Lessons are designed to include opportunities for all pupils to be challenged, encouraging them to push the boundaries of their understanding and deepen their mathematical thinking. Pupils are supported in making connections to prior learning and building a solid foundation for their future studies in secondary school.
