St Dominic Catholic Primary

If we live by truth and in love, we shall grow in Christ

Well done to our Year 1 children!

The children are continuing to settle well into Year 1 and are becoming familiar with the new routines.

Forest School began this week, and the children in group one thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor learning experience with Jules.

In English, the children have been listening to the story of The Ugly Duckling. They have been discussing the characters and the feelings of the ‘Ugly Duckling’. Afterwards, to support retelling the story, the children drew pictures and created some wonderful story maps.

I have been very impressed with the children’s ‘subitising’ skills during Maths lessons. We have been matching objects to a total and counting ‘one more’ and ‘one less’.

During RE lessons, the children have been listening to Psalms which have helped them to recognise the love and care God has for them.

During Science lessons, the children have been focussing on living things and non-living things. They have also been taking part in practical investigations to enable them to think about how they could answer scientific questions.

This week, I was invited to watch the Lion King dance that the children have learnt during PE with Mr Simmonds. The children’s performance was amazing! It was clear that they have been working hard and enjoying the experience.

In Design and Technology, the children have been thinking about what a home for a fairy might be like. In the forthcoming weeks, they will be designing and collecting natural resources to make one of their own.

On Thursday, we are looking forward to our storytelling workshop. Please remember that children are welcome to come into school dressed as a character from a traditional fairy-tale. Therefore, they do not need to wear their school uniform.

We look forward to a fun week ahead!
