St Dominic Catholic Primary

If we live by truth and in love, we shall grow in Christ

Welcome to Year 6!

It has been lovely to welcome the children into Year 6!  They have returned to school in good spirits and they are enjoying the new challenges and topics that we are studying.

In English, we are currently reading together 'The Arthur Spiderwick Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You' which is a fascinating fiction book with beautiful illustrations of mystical creatures that lurk in our world.  We have learned about Boggarts, Treefolk and Leprechauns - to name but a few!  The children are being encouraged to use interesting sentence openers, conjunctions, strong vocabulary and subordinate clauses to enhance their writing.

In Maths, we have got off to a good start by looking at place value, negative numbers and rounding.  The children have shown good recall of the work that we covered in Year 5, which is really pleasing.

This week, in Design and Technology, we have begun to think about our criteria and requirements for making a mobile phone cover using soft felt material.  It will definitely require some good needlework skills to create the finished product but the children are very excited to start the project.  They have suggested some great ideas for their designs.

Last week, Year 6 took part in elections for the House Captain positions and they were amazing.  The speeches, the ideas, the humour and the songs made it a very enjoyable experience.  We were so proud of all the children - they really excelled in explaining why they were the best person for the job.  They spoke with confidence and passion and it was very difficult to choose.  Many congratulations to the children who were elected - we are sure they will do a great job in leading their House.

Next week, we are looking forward to visiting St Albans Fire Station.  This will be a very informative visit, that will help the children to make responsible decisions and stay safe.

We have had a great start to the year.  Well done, Year 6 - keep working hard!
