Learning about Lunar New Year
This week we have been learning all about Lunar New Year. It has been an action packed week with lots of exciting learning taking place. To understand why the Chinese zodiac is made up of 12 different animals, the children learned all about the story of the animal race and that 2023 is the Lunar Year of the Rabbit. Some of the other activities included designing Chinese New Year cards, developing finger strength by picking up items using chopsticks, performing dragon dances and eating some foods which are traditionally shared during the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Janice, Chin and Leo shared with the class how they celebrated the new year. Janice’s Mum told us about the celebrations.
“ It is a tradition to dress in red/gold, decorate our home with flowers and eat Chinese candy box, give out ‘lai see or red packet’ to kids, play mahjong and fireworks as well as have a big meal with our loved ones. We also greet others with ‘Kung Hei Fat Choy’ to wish others a prosperous year ahead.”
Have a lovely weekend,
