St Dominic Catholic Primary

If we live by truth and in love, we shall grow in Christ

English

Subject Leader: Mrs Sandhu

Phonics Lead: Mrs Corcoran

At St Dominic, we are dedicated to encouraging all children to be passionate about reading and writing. It is our intention to immerse pupils in the wonders of quality texts, to instil a love for reading and writing, a passion for discovery and a confidence to explore their imagination. We aim to create life-long readers and writers.

In teaching English, we use high-quality texts as a stimulus for writing outcomes; pupils utilise their reading as a model for their writing.  We aim for our pupils to acquire a wide vocabulary, a solid understanding of grammar and the ability to spell new words effectively by applying the spelling patterns and rules learnt. We encourage pupils to confidently communicate their knowledge, ideas and emotions orally, before applying them in their writing; we want them to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences. Regular hand-writing lessons allow pupils to develop a legible, fluent written style and take pride in the presentation of any written work.
