Holistic Development

Overall, our curriculum has a holistic approach. It is designed to be progressive. This approach enables the children to make connections from as early as their early years’ experience.

Literacy: Year 5 are exposed to a wide range of text that gives them the chance to explore different genres. This equips our students to be versatile writers, whether that be a letter, descriptive text, persuasive text, balanced argument, or story writing. They can implement the features of each genre and be prolific writers. This exposure to a plethora of different writing styles also aids their reading, spelling and understanding of a variety text. Emphasis is also placed on developing their editing and proof-reading skills which is a crucial life skill.

Mathematics: The main aim in maths is to help with quick recall of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Fundamentally, the ability to apply this knowledge in any problem-solving context. Also, this builds fluency, reasoning and problem solving are crucial to our approach to equip children to be more analytical and solution oriented when faced with challenges.

Spiritual Growth: In addition to academic subjects, we will focus on understanding who they are and whose they are in Christ and their divine purpose. This spiritual journey is vital in developing their faith and values. We will engage in discussions and activities that reinforce the Catholic teachings, helping students to grow not only in knowledge but also in character.

Social and Life Skills: Year 5 is also a crucial time for developing social and life skills. Students will participate in group projects, fostering teamwork and communication. They will learn to resolve conflicts, show empathy, and build friendships, all of which are essential for their personal development.

Our residential trip to Alton Castle will be a highlight of the year. This experience will encourage independence, resilience, and a sense of community as they participate in various activities and challenges. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to bond with their peers and create lasting memories.

This penultimate year will be filled with exciting learning experiences that promote academic growth, spiritual development, and essential life skills. We are committed to providing a supportive and nurturing environment where every child can thrive. Thank you for your partnership in your child’s education, and we look forward to a fantastic year ahead of exploration and discovery.

 Warm regards,

Mrs Nelson
